Research commercialization is pivotal for technological advancement, but many innovations fail to reach the market, falling into the so-called "Valley of Death." In Kazakhstan, recent reforms are aimed at overcoming this gap, but the persistence of traditional linear models presents considerable obstacles. Through document analysis and semi-structured interviews, this study explores the nature of these reforms and the barriers encountered by academia and industry in the commercialization process. Theoretically, the study makes a contribution by examining the challenges of shifting from linear innovation models to more complex systems approaches. The findings underscore the difficulty of this transformation in Kazakhstan, highlighting the legacy of the Soviet-era focus on science-push models and the insufficient capacity of local industry to absorb new knowledge. The paper argues that building an effective commercialization pathway requires substantial investment in research infrastructure, capacity building, and regulatory adjustments to facilitate stakeholder collaboration.Item Open Access Application of TPB on the Saving Intention among the Students of Community Colleges: Moderating Effect of Mobile Applications(Global Business and Management Research: An International Journal, 2021) Nizar N.; Choban U.; Mohd H.A.The main objective of this study is to examine the saving intention among the Community College students from the Planned Behavior Theory (TPB) perspective and to investigate whether the proposed relationships are contingent upon their perceptions towards mobile applications. Often this encourages the introduction of state- or institution-wide policies and regulations that put academics and graduate students under performative pressure to publish in international, peer-reviewed journals with a high impact factor (e.g., Scopus- or Web of Science-indexed journals). Such publication requirements are part of the broader internationalization of research (IoR) policies being implemented in many countries. This article adopts a faculty-based perspective and explores the response of academia to IoR policies in Kazakhstan, a developing country that actively pursues a strategy of integrating local academia into the global scientific community. The authors develop a typology of responses based on a literature review to guide the data collection and interpretation. Data for this study were collected through document analysis and semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that IoR policies lead to a variety of responses from academia, including gaming and token conformity.Item Open Access AN ANALYSIS OF PIAAC SURVEY ON KAZAKHSTAN - GENDER, LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION AND SKILLS(2021 International Young Scholars' Conference, 2021) Yelibay M.; Halasz G.Abstract This paper aims to analyse factors predicting who will occupy leadership positions in Kazakhstan, by exploring variables such as gender, skills, level of education, and family background. The purpose of this study was to further explore differences between entrepreneurs decision-makings. However, rather than focusing on previously examined individual differences, this study examined differences in the decision-making processes used by entrepre- neurs. Building on nonrational decision-making models from behavioral decision theory, we asserted that entrepreneurs are more susceptible to the use decision-making biases and heuristics than are managers in large organizations. The use ofbiases and heuristics may also offer some help in explaining why entrepreneurs sometimes make bad managers. Whereas the use ofcognitive biases may be beneficial in some cir- cumstances, it can lead to major errors in others. Although research has yet to establish performance implications, it is possible that the more extensive use ofheuristics in strategic decision-making may be a great advantage during the start-up years. However, it may also lead to the demise ofa business as a firm matures.
