This study investigates the perceptions of pre-service teachers on the role of technology courses in their current teacher training program/curriculum, as well as the extent to which they feel prepared on their ability to integrate technology into their classrooms. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 8 pre-service senior students. In addition, an online questionnaire was sent to 40 pre-service senior students of Suleyman Demirel University. A 5 point Likert Scale questionnaire with 29 items was used. Overall, the findings revealed that pre-service teachers have a strong positive attitude toward technology and high confidence in their competency in using technology. It must be borne in mind that the study was conducted with a small sample group of participants in one particular university. Therefore, further research is needed with an extended size of the sample as well as to expand the field of study.Item Open Access THE IMPORTANCE OF HEDGING IN ACADEMIC WRITING(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) D. Shaikenova; S. TulepovaAbstract. Academic writing in the English language must comply with certain rules and conventions accepted in the scientific communicative culture. Writers should be careful in expressing their statements and try to soften the claims to avoid being extremely categorical. One of the ways to achieve this is using hedging techniques. Therefore, teaching hedging strategy should become an obligatory aspect in the development of EFL (English as a foreign language) learners’ academic writing competence. The article presents definitions of hedging from different points of view, the importance of using this strategy and the diversity of hedging. This brief overview of hedging techniques aims to inform novice writing instructors of this indispensable part of academic writing and to highlight the significance of teaching them in academic writing classes.Item Open Access LEARNING ENGLISH IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL IN KAZAKHSTAN(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) A TlepbergenovaAbstract. Robotic process automation (RPA) has been widely adopted in many industries as a tool, which does repetitive actions in rule-based business processes. Audit companies around the world are always on the way to making processes more efficient with help of automation and RPA is not an exception. However, there are always two sides of the coin, and there are both benefits and limitations of using RPA. Using RPA may be not efficient in some circumstances, so it is important to understand in what cases using RPA will bring more advantages than disadvantages. The main purpose of this study is to understand the conditions under which adopting the Robotic Process Automation Systems will influence the operational efficiency in the audit firms in Kazakhstan. Because the main purpose of the study is to understand the challenges and opportunities of applying RPA, a qualitative approach has been selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five specialists in the audit sector. After transcribing the interview conversations, a thematic analysis method resulted in 47 open-codes. In the analysis part was discussed some tendencies, opportunities, and barriers of effective implementation of RPA.Item Open Access THE IMPORTANCE OF WRITING SKILLS FOR EFL LEARNERS: COMMON ERRORS AND WAYS OF IMPROVING(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) E. Kozhakhmet; S. TulepovaAbstract. In order to attain specific language mastery, it is required to obtain four major skills of language such as writing, reading, listening, and speaking. One of the most complicated and highly required skills among all these four skills is writing, and since it is considered to be difficult, it is impossible to acquire this skill in a natural way for EFL (English as a foreign language) learners. Moreover, it is mostly accepted as the skill that has many complexities thus playing a determining role in linguistic output. For example, EFL learners frequently face difficulties in writing connected with such language components as vocabulary, grammatical structure, coherence and cohesion, spelling and punctuation. The following article aims to emphasize the significance of writing in learning a foreign language. It also attempts to highlight some common errors in students’ writings and to suggest extensive reading as an essential solution and effective way of developing writing skills.Item Open Access TO USE OR NOT TO USE: INSTAGRAM AS A FACILITATOR OF DEVELOPING ENGLISH WRITING SKILLS(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) A. Omarova; S. TulepovaAbstract. Developing writing skills may be challenging for the majority of students while learning English. They easily get bored of typical writing structures and often neglect such tasks. In order to engage students in the writing process and boost their interest, teachers always try to search for new modern teaching tools. One of the contemporary instruments to develop English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing skills might be using social media. The current article attempts to conduct an overview of the studies devoted to the investigation of Instagram as a tool to practice writing as well as to facilitate the development of writing skills.Item Open Access THE TEACHERS' AND STUDENTS' AWARENESS OF STEM EDUCATION PRACTICED IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN KAZAKHSTANI SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) Gulnaz Turaliyeva; Gulnara KassymovaAbstract. This article highlights the vital role of teaching STEM (Science. Technology, Engineering and Math) in English in Kazakhstani secondary schools specialized in science and explores teachers' and students’ knowledge and awareness of STEM education practiced in English. The data reflected in this article is based on small-scale research held through the survey conducted among 149 Kazakhstani secondary school learners with in-depth study in math, physics and biology and interviews with 3 content teachers who practice teaching STEM subjects in English in schools specialized in science. The results of the survey demonstrate that students’ general knowledge about a term of STEM is relatively low. Also, the results of the interview with teachers show that the STEM approach is applied through English in specialized schools and participants relate this approach to other methods such as PBL and CLIL. It provides encouraging expectations for further study and implementation of integrated STEM education with ELT in Kazakhstani secondary schools.Item Open Access MODALITY CATEGORY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) М .Б Байымбетова; Дж.А.ҚұрбанбаевAbstract: Language modality is relevant in modern linguistics. The horizontal hand gesture recognition is an innovative, cheaper way for human-computer interaction. Currently, most researchers work with sensors, devices for hand gesture recognition, which require more resources. Instead, the presented horizontal method for hand gesture signal recognition by frames, with trained model algorithms. A key element of this work is the research of a recognition algorithm using only a single camera and collecting dataset to train a hand recognition model. In the presented framework, the hand detection works with computer vision (CV) algorithms, in general MediaPipe as a converting blue, green, red (BGR) image to red, green, blue (RGB) before processing. There are handedness and hand landmarks on the image as a result of a hand detection. Each point of the landmark has coordination x, y. z values. The collected dataset will be used to train a model with machine learning (ML) or neural network algorithms to develop this project as a hand gesture recognition project.Item Open Access THE USE OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING TO IMPROVE INTERCULTURAL-COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE(СДУ хабаршысы - 2022, 2022) A.Gatiat; A.ZhorabekovaAbstract. Apart from linguistic competence, today’s globalized world demands Intercultural communicative competence (ICC), hence, integration of ICC in EFL classes has become one of the vital issues. Ten steps of Stoller (1997) is considered to be an effective tool of PBL which can create opportunities to improve ICC. In order to maximize the benefit of PBL in the classroom, the author suggests creating tasks by relying on Stoller’s (1997) ten steps of PBL. Tasks should be based on PBL essentials, at the same time tasks are closely interconnected with ICC main elements as: respect, tolerance, curiosity and authenticity. This article attempts to present the role of ICC in our society and how it can be culminated through project-based learning.
