Abstract

While the economies of Central Asian countries highly depend on agriculture, only 20% of their land is suitable for agricultural purposes. This raises a great concern for efficient use of limited agricultural resources. However, very few studies, and in the cases of some Central Asian countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan no single study have been done on agricultural efficiency. This article aims to fill this gap by conducting efficiency analysis in the case of the sample of wheat producing farms in Kazakhstan, by using stochastic frontier analysis. The paper has three main objectives: 1) to estimate technical efficiencies of wheat producers, 2) to examine the influences of inputs like land, labor, seed, fertilizer, pesticide and fuel on the productivity of wheat producers, and 3) to assess the impacts of explanatory variables such as education of the farmer, size of the farm, access to credits and subsidies and etc. on the efficiency of wheat producers.
