An Empirical Analysis of Accounting Students’ Career Plans in Kazakhstan
(Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, 2018) Ugur Ch.; Zhubanova G.
This study determines the factors influencing accounting students’ choices to pursue their career as a chartered accountant or not. A survey method is used to collect the data. 200 students from 5 different universities from Almaty region participated in this study. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) findings reveal 5 different factors such as; (i) power, (ii) fringe benefits, (iii) soft skills, (iv) personal development as well as (v) physical and emotional safety. Further, it was found that accounting students in Kazakhstan who intend to choose a career in accounting give a much higher priority to their soft skills and financial factors in the form of fringe benefits than those who have chosen other career. The results of this study might have some practical implications as they might open new perspectives for restructuring accounting curriculum. Other implications of this study may help students in the accounting field to understand their abilities and skills, as well as help them better navigate in their future career. Theoretical implications and limitations are discussed.

Determination of Problems in the Basic Language Skills of University Students learning Turkish in Kazakhstan
(Faculty of Education and Humanities, 2011) Özdemir C.; Özdemir E.D.; Ugur Ch.; Uysal S.
This study investigated the relationship between student characteristics (gender, major), and the problems they face when learning Turkish language skills at university level in Kazakhstan. Participants included 120 Kazakh students from three faculties (Law, Philology, and Engineering). They completed a 28 item Likert-type questionnaire which also included two open ended items. MANOVA results indicated that gender and the problems students face were not significantly related while there was a significant relation between major and the problems they face. The only statistically significant relation was found for writing skill. The Chisquare analysis results indicated no relation between both gender and major, and the most difficulty skill to learn. The possible reasons behind the results and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Does gender play role in access to debt finance in Kazakhstan?
(Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, 2018) Nurgabdeshov A.; Zamanbekov D; Ugur Ch.; Yenikeyeva A.
There is a substantial literature on the relationship between gender and access to finance. The purpose of this research paper is to investigate the impact of gender on the usage of different funding sources in a sample of Kazakh small- to medium-sized enterprises. Most studies have been concerned with access to debt finance however this was not done in Kazakhstan in tge scope of used literature. The database includes variables on terms of credit for the firms’ unofficial loans and detailed information on the firms’ banking relationships. The total number of firm-year observations in the database is 56. The analysis is based on multivariate tests. The funding patterns of women-owned enterprises and men-owned enterprises in the data are different. The results also contradict prior studies, which indicate that MOE have easier access to bank lending. The results suggest that there are no gender-related differences in the use of bank debt. But this research accepts the theory that MOE have nore access to unofficial finance. The results of study both confirm and contradict the results of prior research and the paper suggests that this is due to the context-specific features of the Kazakh labour market and the gender system as well as the bank-centered financial markets. Practical implications – concerning the issues of gender and finance, policy makers and financial experts in any country should not uncritically rely on the research results arrived at in other countries.

Social Networks and Entrepreneurships – Does Personal Networks Matters?
    (Jurnal Pengurusan, 2022) Ugur Ch.
Institutional and social network are several major research traditions in the business and management areas. This paper examines the role of owner/managers’ social network on entrepreneurship initiatives and the underlying socio-cultural factors promoting or impeding SME development in Kazakhstan. A semi-structured interviews were carried-out with thirteen SME owners/managers in Almaty Kazakhstan. It is found that personal networks in general social networks have significant implications on a variety of entrepreneurial activities. SMEs still need to utilize their personal social networks to substitute for formal institutions. Normative institutional elements such as legal and moral are still major factors driving entrepreneurial activities but still lagging behind regulative and cognitive institutional transformation. Business ties and networking ability may mitigate the necessity for external financing. One of the major implication in this study is the need for SME owners/managers to build personal networks and to keep and maintain this network with their peers as well as the government not only for extra information but even for the sustainability of their business. To do this, SME owners/managers need to be regularly in contact with their peers and government officials, offering helps when needed, collaborate on projects, share their goals, get connected on social media and also joining networking events.
